DUST 514 is going to be free to play!

It seems that CCP has decided that DUST 514 will be free to play. No cover charge, no minimum buy in, just free to play. Forever. You can see the details over at eurogamer, but I'll give you the short version.
There was going to be a $10 to $20 cover charge for the game on PSN, but that has now been scrapped.
"It was a relatively confusing proposition," executive producer Brandon Laurino explained to Eurogamer, "and we wanted to make it unambiguously that this is a free-to-play game."
We've also got some juicy details on what types of microtransactions we can expect to see.
Items available include vanity goods to customise appearances with; boosters that save time, such as double skill point (SP) boosters; variants of weapons that aren't necessarily more powerful - "side-grades" that look or play differently; services like character respecs; and lucky dip treasure boxes. "It's what has emerged as best practice," Laurino said.
And for those worried they will be  missing out on important game content if they don't pay out, don't be.
"There won't be some section of the universe that's blocked off. It's really about what you build on those planets - some of those will be earned, some of those will be paid. Again, none will give an unfair advantage, but may have a unique look, or a certain tweak or side-grade."
So all in all, a good turn of events for seeing more people give DUST 514 a try. Make sure you check out all the details at Eurogamer.

What do you think of this turn of events? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Update: Here is official PlayStation Blog post by Brandon as well.

  2. By simply being free, this will create a huge influx of players. However, I'm sure that Dust 514 being a part of the EVE universe will weed out the weak and whiny over time. (CoD players)

    2. no kidding it will weed them out, actually reap them by the hundreds. if jumping straight into EVE will cause multiple forms of player BSOD including tears and rage, what do you think Dust 514 will do to the weak minded?

  3. Just because the main line games (Cod, BF3, GoW ect) aren’t free and i don’t know of any other precedence this make me worried :/ but then this is ccp so il hold my breath

  4. But aren't you worried that the fact of it being free will bring every IDIOT out there into the game?? Even people who are not FPS players. Anyone who will go to the PSN Store when Dust is released will see "DUST 514 MMO FPS 100% free to play" or something within those lines. And the result is everyone downloading it, and it gets infested with people who have no idea what they're doing. That decision CCP made really worried me, and makes me feel as if its going to be game breaking.

    2. Basically what Broadcastorm said. Corporations will make sure that you're dealing with competent people. Corporations will get the serious work such as planetary takeovers, and everyone else will just mull about in faction warfare/quick play to serve as target practice for you and your corporation when you're between contracts. I don't see a problem with that.

  5. I don't know if this is a good or a bad thing as Free to Play games in the past make there money off a in game cash store and having something like that will destabilize the EVE economy All I can say is that I would prefer paying anything upto $100 to get my account activated if it avoids a cash store scenario if however Dust should not feature a cash store I'll look silly for making this post in the first pace. Either way Myself and my Team can't wait for Dust 514

  6. I was fine the way it was originality showed, pay 20$ or so and play.
also it just bugs me about all the F2P stuff with mmos and all...
but unlike most gamers that I know I won't go into a rage or go all QQ about it, I'll wait and see how it handles.
